(I am bad!!!!) Anyways... GO NDP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyways, this weekend I went to my favourite theatre (the Mayfair) and saw "Good Night and Good Luck" and "A History of Violence" one of the best four hours spent in a movie theatre in a very long time. Both movies were excellent, however, they were definitely not similar to eachother, "Good Night and Good Luck", is a docudrama filmed in black and white, about communist fear and McCarthyism in the early fifties, and a small group of broadcasters in the CBS studios who fought against McCarthy by revealing evidence and the emmense problems of the anti-communist system on a Tuesday night tv show. It was very well directed and acted, and a very strong comment on the similarly ridiculous fear today of arabic people. The similarities of George Bush and Joseph McCmarthy are quite obvious as we hear trials of suspected communists and the like. And being a budding socialist myself, I found the film extra interesting.
The second film, "A History of Violence", was, well, very very violent, more than I'm used to viewing (which is alot saying) but at the same time, completely amazing. Now, I know if I reveal anything about the story in this, I'll have an instant bounty on my head, so I'll talk about the style only. I could hardly blink throughout the whole movie, I had to catch every word, and see every detail (uuuggghhh) it was quite amazing, wow, bang, swoosh, the acting was amazing, and the style made me afraid of what would happen to every character, even the mean ones.
For those readers that aren't familiar with the Mayfair theatre, it is down on Bank Street, and has been around since 1932, It's interior is ginormous, not wasting time on a large lobby, all the space goes into the theatre itself, it specializes in good cinema, though not only obscure. It has the latest good hollywood movies, as well as great movies which the large theatres were stupid enough to not play. watching a film there is an experience in it's own as the theatre has been kept much the same as it was in 1932 with the exception of new surround sound and more comfortable seats(although a few original seats remain, for nostalgia). Like the old days of cinema, you pay for a ticket to go into the theatre, when you leave is up to you. Meaning that they show two different movies a night, and people often stay in the theatre after the first feature to view the second, this is the way to get the whole Mayfair experience. Definitely check some movies out there.
Well, syanara, gone to study, bye.
